Riding 100 km for cancer research . . . Can you help?

It is getting close . . . and I’m writing (if you haven’t already provided your support), to see if you can help out the cause in my upcoming Sept. 7 100 km ride to support cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital.

In the last 10 years, we have probably learned more about the fundamental biology underlying health and disease than in all the previous 100 years. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) www.ohri.ca is at the forefront of this brave new era, with a number of exciting projects now moving forward.?mark on bike.jpg

I’ll be cycling 100 kilometres on Saturday, September 7th, from the Ernst and Young Centre in Ottawa to Merrickville-Wolford, with hundreds of other riders. All the proceeds will go to the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute to support cancer research, treatment, and services right here in Ottawa. Last year the event raised more than $1.7 million.

You can really help here!

Use the links at the bottom of this email to go visit my webpage? and please take the time to support me. ?Please keep in mind the commitment I’m making to end this heartbreaking disease and the personal efforts I’ll have to make to accomplish this.

ride the rideau logo.jpgWhen I say “heartbreaking,” here’s what I mean: according to the Canadian Cancer Society, there were more than 173,800 new cases of cancer and 76,200 deaths from cancer last year.On average, 3,340 Canadians will?be diagnosed with cancer every week, and the risk of being diagnosed increases with age. While 43 per cent of cancer cases and 61 per cent of cancer deaths occur in people who are at least 70 years old, cancer can occur in people of all ages.

Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Canada. The stark real ity is that today, one in three people will contract this devastating disease, and one out of four Canadians are expected to die from cancer.

That’s why I’m riding; to do something BIG about cancer! I hope that you’ll share this incredible adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.
